Make Up and Hair by Composure

Make Up and Hair Styling had always been an interest for Angelique Grobler. Starting out as a hair stylist, she nervously branched out into Make Up - what she didn't know was just how talented she would be! A passion for making women look and feel great, encouraged Angelique to take the plunge and set up her own business. Welcome to the exciting world of make up and hair!

What inspired you to become a Hair and Make Up Artist?

I have always had a passion for Hair styling and making women feel good about themselves and I knew that once I left school I wanted to go study Hairdressing. After my year of studies I went and did my practical at Carlton Hair, this is where I met a Make Up artist named Jenna and she inspired me to go study the art of Make Up. At first I was rather hesitant because I had never even thought about doing Make Up and I didn’t know if I would be any good. I enrolled myself at The Make Up Issue in Northcliff and from day one I loved every second of it. This is where I realized that my passion for making women feel good went far beyond Hair. Once I finished my studies I decided I was going to combine my skills and talents and open my own business. I have always been a girl that has dreamt of fashion shows, magazines and photo shoots and I knew that once I started this I would never look back.

What are the advantages of working for yourself?

The main advantage of working for yourself is clear, you are your own boss and you have your own time. The other advantage is that you can push yourself to limits you thought you would never reach and achieve goals you thought would never be possible. It’s wonderful to watch something grow that you put so much effort into.

What are the disadvantages of working for yourself?

With having your own business comes a lot of stress and you don’t always have someone else to share that stress with. The other downside is that you are responsible for so many things and if something goes wrong you can only blame yourself. It’s a lot of pressure that you put on yourself and you don’t always know where your next pay check is coming from.

What has been your greatest challenge so far?

My greatest challenge so far has been to not give up hope, especially in the first 6 months of starting the business. It was tough and there were many times when I felt I had made a huge mistake and I should just go work in a salon and follow the trend.

What are your greatest achievements?

My greatest achievement has definitely been my business and being so successful. I have done so many big events, like SA fashion week, The wedding Expo Hair for the fashion shows and I have so many more big events coming up.  I really cannot say I have one great achievement because the entire experience has been amazing.

How do you ensure worklife balance?

To be honest I find it very hard to balance work and my social life, especially because I am trying to establish the business name and I don’t always know when to stop working. I will send emails at 11 o’clock at night if it means my quote gets to my client first. My business comes first, but I always have time for the people that have been there since the beginning and supported me all the way.

What would be the ultimate goal for your business?

My ultimate goal is to be the most sought after Hair and Make Up company in South Africa. Currently I am only in Johannesburg but I am slowly trying to hit the other regions of South Africa. My goal is to build an empire and eventually Composure will be a household brand that offers Make Up products, hair products, clothing, shoes and skin products.

Who are your customers?

Most of my customers are Brides, as I do specialize in Bridal Hair and Make Up, but that’s only because I am a hopeless romantic and I love to see every Bride with a huge smile on her face before she walks down the aisle. My customers range from the age of 16- 60.

What advice would you give to someone starting a business?

Never give up and always have that little bit of Faith. God is always by your side and will keep you strong.

Name one thing that you could not live without in your business

I could not live without my emails. If it weren’t for emails I wouldn’t have any clients.

What is your favourite or most popular product/service?

My absolute favourite product is MAC’s gel eyeliner. It’s absolutely amazing and my Make Up wouldn’t be the same without it. And then of course my GHD.
