Holiday Photography – Bring Home the Most Amazing Memories

Holiday Photography – Bring Home the Most Amazing Memories

Ever gone on holiday and wished that you could bring home professional holiday photos that could be cherished forever? Owner of Photography by Karma Hill in Maui saw ’holiday photography’ as her niche in the market. Now running a successful photography business shooting everything from weddings to a romantic walk on the beach, her amazing talent and beautiful photos say it all!

What inspired or motivated you to become a Photographer?

I have always loved photography, but when I first moved to Maui, I would sit on the beach people watching, I realized that these people where having the time of their lives, in one of the most beautiful places on earth.  I also noticed that there a lot of people doing snapshots of each other or doing the old "self portrait" with them holding the camera at arm’s length.  I figured that people would appreciate a fun professional photography service that could capture their amazing vacation in a beautiful and epic way. Check out Karma Hill Photography's Services.

What are the advantages of working for yourself?

I get to make my own schedule work for me, so I can spend time with my kids and take vacations when I want to. I have the freedom to design my business in the way I want, I create my own packages based on what I want to shoot and how I want to shoot.  The sky is the limit as far as I am concerned, there is no end game, I can always be growing, getting better and getting rewarded for my hard work, because I give myself the raises around here!

What are the disadvantages of working for yourself?

There can be long hours and late nights, I have been lucky and have found a way to have a manageable work life schedule, it took me about 4 years to get it just right however! Having to think about non-creative aspects such as health insurance, taxes, permits etc, is also not fun.

What has been your greatest challenge so far?

Finding my work and life balance. When I started my business I did not have kids and now I have two active boys.  I had to totally change the way I did things after each child was born to fit my newly expanded life.  It has been a very conscious effort to maximize my output and my time with my family.

What are your greatest achievements?

Besides my amazing children, I am very proud of my business model of vacation photography.  It has been a total success for me personally and I have helped other photographers take charge and build their business as well through my e-book called "Destination Photography Business - How to tap Into the Multi-Billion Dollar Travel Industry" I get to live in a place that I absolutely LOVE and make great money doing something I LOVE.

How do you ensure work life balance?

Do only what I have a passion for and outsource the rest.  When I first started I did it ALL now I mainly just shoot. I have built an amazing team of talented people who support me and make my business volume possible. Also, setting personal boundaries.  I have two small children that I want to spend quality time with so I never shoot on Sunday, no matter what the gig is and I only book two sunsets a week so that I can actually eat dinner with my family most nights. It is hard to say no, really hard. However I find that the clients who really want to work with me will find a way to make my schedule work with theirs and then everyone is happy! If I lose a couple of gigs a year, it is well worth the cost to me to get to see my family.

Who are your customers?

My clients are from all over the world, visiting Maui for a vacation or a wedding.

Name one thing that you could not live without in your business.

Online booking, it changed my life. Instead of answering phone calls and emails all day, paid bookings are waiting for me in my inbox!

Does the internet help you in spreading the word about your business?

I wouldn't be where I am today without online marketing.  99% of my clients do not live in the location I shoot in, almost all of them find me online. When I first started, Google adwords was a huge part of our online marketing and more than paid for itself over and over.  Now that we have been in business for a while now, we have great natural ranking and more and more referrals from all over the world, so we don't need it anymore, but it was integral to starting and growing our business.
