Cakes that are right out of your wildest dreams.... Check out this brilliant interview.
What inspired or motivated you to become a Baker?
I’ve enjoyed decorating cakes for many years but it wasn’t until I had my son that I really became addicted to cake decorating!! It really is a passion of mine.
Are their rush or peak times in your business? How do you work around these?
The end of the week is always very frantic. Fridays are a huge day – I can easily work for 14 hours to get orders finished for Saturday. I try and complete as much work ahead of time to lighten the load from Thursday and Friday. I will cover all my cake boards and make any fondant components, do quotations and answer emails at the beginning of the week.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of working for yourself?
The advantages are that I can schedule my work around my family. I find that I do a lot of work at night after my little boy has gone to bed. I actually really enjoy it.
The disadvantage is definitely having to do everything yourself. Marketing and social media take up a huge amount of time.
What are your greatest achievements?
One achievement that I am really proud of is gaining a 5 star (the highest) rating from my local council for hygiene standards. I am very fortunate to work from home, from a licensed kitchen. I follow strict hygiene standards to ensure my cakes are of the utmost quality.
Who are your customers?
I specialise in children’s birthday cakes so the majority of my customers are local mums who want a fantastic cake for their child’s birthday.
What advice would you give to someone starting a business?
It is a lot of work but if you are passionate about what you do it doesn’t really feel like work at all.
Name one thing that you could not live without in your business.
My Kitchenaid mixer! It is my work horse and I could not live without it. And my ever-growing collection of cake tins/pans.
What is your favourite or most popular product/service?
1st birthday cakes are my most favourite cakes to create. There is nothing more special than a 1st birthday. I just love the look on the parent’s face when they come and collect their cake and see it for the first time - it’s a real buzz.
How big a role does Social Media play in your business?
It is really important to my business. It’s where I can connect with potential new customers and stay in touch with my past customers. It is also a fabulous way to showcase my creations.
What has been your best marketing method for your business?
One of the most successful things I have done is to advertise on a local website called Brisbane Kids. I have generated a lot of orders from that advert!
By far the best marketing is word of mouth. I get lots of work from my past customers who pass on my business details to their friends and family. That’s the one great thing about cakes – they are the centrepiece of the celebration and everyone wants to know ‘who made the cake?’
